Commissioner
The Federation Wallonia-Brussels (former French Community of Belgium) – one of the three linguistic communities in Belgium – is an institution dedicated to the French-speaking inhabitants of Brussels and Wallonia. It takes in charge a list of competences such as Education, Youth, Sport and Culture.
Within the Federation Wallonia-Brussels, the Direction of contemporary visual arts (General Administration of Culture) has the mission to promote contemporary art at a professional level in its diversity and various disciplines. It supports artists, designers, stylists and craftsmen as well as institutions and associations promoting contemporary arts in Brussels and Wallonia.
The Direction of contemporary visual arts contributes to the dissemination of contemporary art by editing “l’art même” (its quarterly magazine) and coproducing the radio broadcasts of “le monde invisible” (La Première – RTBF). Furthermore, it participates in art fairs in Belgium, providing wider visibility to artists and cultural institutions. Every four years, the Direction organizes the selection of the artists for the Belgian pavilion at the Biennale of Visual Arts in Venice.
